The Mt Baker Theater

📍Bellingham, Washington

Another Washington state location I visit often is Bellingham. Some of my favorite people and favorite beers can be found in Bellingham so naturally, I had to look for something spooky to investigate.

The Mount Baker Theatre has been a centerpiece of entertainment in Bellingham since 1927, welcoming performers and productions from around the world. For nearly a century, it has brought live theater, music, dance, and cultural events to the city and the wider region.

When it first opened, the theater was designed as a lavish movie palace in an exotic Spanish Moorish style, meant to transport small-town audiences to another world. Of the five grand theaters once built in the Bellingham area, Mount Baker Theatre is the only one still standing. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, and in 1984 the community came together to save it from demolition.

With that much history, it is no surprise the theater has gathered a few ghost stories of its own.

Local lore says Mount Baker Theatre is haunted by a friendly spirit known as Judy, along with a few other lingering presences. Some sightings have been blamed on a little too much to drink, but others remain harder to explain. In one former office turned storage room, a locked safe sat mysteriously sealed for years, with no one knowing the combination. Then, during cleanup for renovations, the safe was suddenly found standing open.

Another eerie story came from a couple who claimed they saw the spirit of a large black cat at the bottom of the backstage stairs. Later research uncovered a strange possible connection: in the late 1930s, a traveling circus had performed at the theater, and a black panther reportedly died in that very room.

Can’t beat a good haunted theater story! But the ghost panther is definitely a new one….
